The International Summit on "The Spirit of Asilomar and the Future of Biotechnology" was held at the historic Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California, USA, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1975 International Conference on Recombinant DNA Molecules. Co-hosted by Rice University, Stanford University, and the Science History Institute, the summit convened approximately 300 attendees worldwide, including scientists, policymakers, ethicists, legal experts, journalists, and representatives from Global South countries. The summit delved into cutting-edge technologies such as synthetic biology, gene editing, mirror life, and AI-driven bioengineering, with a particular focus on topics like ethical governance of biotechnology, equitable access, and responsible innovation. At the summit, Professor Lei Ruipeng introduced the Declaration on Ethical Governance of Synthetic Biology, reaching a value consensus with the international academic community on the ethical governance of synthetic biotechnology and promoting the establishment of a more inclusive and equitable global biotechnological governance framework.
